EXCRETION

Excretion is a process in which metabolic waste is eliminated from an organism. In vertebrates this is primarily carried out by the lungskidneys and skin. Aquatic animals usually excrete ammonia directly into the external environment. In terrestrial animals ammonia-like compounds are converted into other nitrogenous materials. The excreted material may be called ejecta.

4

i

In unicellular organisms, waste products are discharged outside through-

  1. surface of the cell

  2. Kidneys

  3. Glands

  4. All of these

ii

Waste that is eliminated by the skin in humans is/are-

  1. Water and salts

  2. Urea

  3. Lactic acid

  4. All of these

iii

Assertion: Aquatic animals usually excrete ammonia directly into the external environment.

Reason: This compound has high solubility and there is ample water available for dilution.

  1. Both assertion and reason are correct and reason is correct explanation.

  2. Both assertion and reason are correct but reason is not correct explanation.

  3. Assertion is correct but reason is false.

  4. Both assertion and reason are false

iv

Birds excrete their nitrogenous wastes as-

  1. Ammonia

  2. Uric acid

  3. Urea

  4. Amino acid

16.

Bakanae disease is also called as foolish seedling disease. It affects the rice plant through the roots or crowns. It is caused by Gibberella fujikuroi. Affected seedlings show abnormal elongation and in severe cases may lead to death.

4

i

  1. Protozoa

  2. Virus

  3. Fungus

  4. Bacteria

ii

The abnormal elongation of seedlings in affected plants is due to secretion of

  1. Ethylene

  2. Auxin

  3. Gibberellin

  4. Cytokinin
